How Thrizer Can Make Out-of-Network Therapy Easier

QUICK ANSWER:

What is Thrizer?

Thrizer is a payment and billing platform that helps simplify the process of using out-of-network insurance benefits for therapy.

When you choose an out-of-network therapist, you would typically pay the full session fee, receive a superbill, submit a claim yourself, and wait for your insurance company to process it. Thrizer can automate much of that process by checking your benefits, submitting claims after your sessions, and tracking their status.

For some eligible clients who have met their out-of-network deductible, Thrizer Pay may also allow them to pay only their estimated portion of the session fee upfront instead of waiting weeks for reimbursement.

Finding the right therapist is already a significant decision. Understanding deductibles, reimbursement rates, superbills, and claim forms should not have to become a second job.

Although working with an out-of-network therapist can give you more freedom to choose a provider who specializes in your needs, the insurance process can feel confusing. Many people are unsure whether they have out-of-network benefits, how much therapy will actually cost, or what they need to submit to their insurance company.

At Temperance Psychotherapy, I partner with Thrizer to make that process more manageable for clients who want to use their out-of-network benefits.

In this guide, I’ll explain how Thrizer works, the difference between its reimbursement options, and what you should know before deciding whether to use it.

What Is Thrizer?

Thrizer is a platform designed specifically to help therapists and clients manage private-pay and out-of-network therapy expenses.

Depending on your insurance plan and eligibility, Thrizer may help you:

  • Check whether your plan includes out-of-network benefits

  • View your deductible and estimated reimbursement

  • Automatically submit insurance claims after sessions

  • Track claims and reimbursements online

  • Receive reimbursement without submitting superbills yourself

  • Pay only your estimated out-of-pocket portion after meeting your deductible, when eligible

Instead of leaving you to navigate the claims process on your own, Thrizer handles many of the administrative steps behind the scenes.

How Does Thrizer Work for Therapy?

The process is designed to be relatively simple.

Step 1: Check Your Benefits

Before beginning therapy, you can use Thrizer to receive an estimate of your out-of-network benefits.

The estimate may include:

  • Your out-of-network deductible

  • How much of that deductible you have already met

  • Your coinsurance rate

  • An estimated reimbursement amount

  • Your estimated cost per session after meeting the deductible

This can give you a clearer starting point when deciding whether therapy fits within your budget.

However, benefit information is still an estimate rather than a guarantee of payment. Your insurance company makes the final decision about how each claim is processed.

Step 2: Create Your Thrizer Account

If you decide to use Thrizer, you will receive an invitation to create an account and add a payment method.

You can then choose whether you want Thrizer to submit out-of-network claims on your behalf.

Step 3: Attend Your Therapy Session

Your therapy itself does not change. You attend your appointment as scheduled, either in person or virtually.

After the session, your payment is processed through Thrizer and the necessary claim information can be submitted automatically.

Step 4: Track Your Claim

You can log into your client portal to see:

  • Your payment history

  • Submitted claims

  • Current claim status

  • Reimbursements received

  • How much remains on your deductible

If you have a question about a claim, you can also communicate with Thrizer’s support team through the platform.

What Is the Difference Between OON Pay and Thrizer Pay?

Thrizer offers two primary ways to use out-of-network benefits after your deductible has been met.

OON Pay

With OON Pay, you pay the full therapy fee at the time of your session. Thrizer automatically submits the claim, and you receive any reimbursement available through your insurance plan.

This option may be a good fit if you:

  • Can comfortably pay the full session fee upfront

  • Want help submitting and tracking claims

  • Prefer to receive the insurance reimbursement yourself

  • Do not want to manage superbills or claim forms manually

Out-of-network reimbursements frequently take several weeks, although the timeline varies by insurance company and individual claim.

Thrizer Pay

If you are eligible for Thrizer Pay and have met your out-of-network deductible, you may be able to pay only your estimated out-of-pocket responsibility at the time of your session.

For example, if a session costs $175 and your insurance is expected to reimburse part of that amount, you may pay only your estimated coinsurance and any portion not covered by the plan. Thrizer advances the remaining session fee to the therapist and then waits for reimbursement from your insurance company.

This can be especially helpful when the cost of paying the full fee each week—and then waiting for reimbursement—would make consistent therapy difficult.

Eligibility for Thrizer Pay depends on your insurance plan, deductible status, and other factors. It is not available with every plan.

Do I Have to Submit Superbills Myself?

Usually, no.

When you opt into Thrizer’s out-of-network billing service, claims can be submitted automatically after your sessions. This removes the need to download a superbill, locate your insurance company’s claim form, upload the documentation, and follow the claim through processing.

You can still access superbills through your account if you prefer to submit claims independently or need them for your records.

How Much Will Insurance Reimburse?

Your reimbursement depends entirely on your individual insurance plan.

Factors that can affect the amount include:

  • Whether your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits

  • Your out-of-network deductible

  • How much of the deductible you have already met

  • Your coinsurance percentage

  • Your insurance company’s allowed amount for the service

  • The type and length of the therapy session

  • How your insurance company processes the claim

For example, a plan that says it covers 70% of out-of-network care does not necessarily reimburse 70% of the therapist’s actual fee. The percentage may be applied to the insurance company’s allowed amount, which can be lower than the therapist’s rate.

Thrizer can provide an estimate, but neither Thrizer nor your therapist can guarantee how an insurance company will process or reimburse a claim.

Are There Fees for Using Thrizer?

Thrizer’s current pricing depends on which reimbursement option you use.

At the time of publication, OON Pay generally charges a fee equal to 1% of the therapist’s session fee when reimbursement is successfully obtained. Thrizer Pay generally charges 5% of the therapist’s fee in exchange for allowing an eligible client to pay only their estimated responsibility upfront.

Because Thrizer’s services, eligibility requirements, and pricing can change, review the current terms shown during enrollment before selecting an option.

Can I Use Thrizer Before Meeting My Deductible?

Yes.

Even if you have not yet met your out-of-network deductible, Thrizer can submit eligible claims so that the amount recognized by your insurance company is applied toward it.

You will generally remain responsible for the full therapy fee until the deductible has been met. Once it has been met, you may begin receiving reimbursement or become eligible for Thrizer Pay, depending on your plan.

Does Thrizer Guarantee Reimbursement?

No.

Thrizer makes the billing process easier, but it cannot control your insurance company’s decisions. A benefits estimate is not a guarantee that a claim will be paid or that it will be reimbursed at a particular amount.

Before starting therapy, it can still be helpful to ask your insurance company:

  • Does my plan cover outpatient mental health services from an out-of-network provider?

  • What is my out-of-network deductible?

  • How much of that deductible have I met?

  • What is my coinsurance after the deductible?

  • Is there a separate behavioral-health company managing my benefits?

  • Are there limitations on virtual therapy?

  • Do I need preauthorization or a referral?

  • How is the allowed amount determined for CPT codes 90834 and 90837?

Thrizer can reduce the administrative burden, but understanding the terms of your specific plan remains important.

Important update for clients with Blue Cross Blue Shield: As of September 2026, Thrizer reports that it can continue submitting eligible BCBS claims, but therapists must register directly with the appropriate BCBS plan as nonparticipating providers. For affected plans, reimbursement is issued to the client by paper check, and Thrizer Pay and direct deposit are unavailable. Because requirements may vary among BCBS plans, confirm the current process before relying on anticipated reimbursement.

Is Using Thrizer Required?

No.

Using Thrizer is optional. You may choose to:

  • Use Thrizer to submit and track claims

  • Pay privately and request a superbill to submit yourself

  • Pay privately without involving insurance at all

Some clients prefer not to use insurance because submitting claims usually requires a mental health diagnosis and allows certain information to be shared with the insurance company. Others value the potential reimbursement and prefer having Thrizer manage the administrative work.

There is no universally correct option. The best choice depends on your coverage, budget, privacy preferences, and comfort level.
